In the nineteenth century, the Bengal Renaissance or the beginning of the new age was an important turning point in history. The book discusses the life stories and ideals of five personalities who led this movement. The contributions of these five gems (panch ratna) are undeniable in the path of Bengali self-identity, rights, and reform liberation. Ram Mohan-Ramakrishna Vivekananda were proponents of internationalism and establishing one's own religion, while Vidyasagar was the pioneer of social reform, education, and Bengali language reform. On the other hand, Pandit Haraprasad Shastri was involved in knowledge pursuit, tradition, and culture, and Bhudev, though engaged in an academic career, was committed to self-interest and Bengali identity. The life works and ideals of these five gems of the new age can be a guiding light for the present generation.
